5 SEA Horror Movies based on true events that will make you feel like you are never alone.

5 SEA Horror Movies based on true events that will make you feel like you are never alone.

Everyone loves a ghost story or haunted house movie. Did you know that Southeast Asia is home to the most gruesome, spine-chilling horror stories dating back hundreds of years? Rich in myths and legends, many of which come from unsettling and true events, Southeast Asian horror has transcended mere folklore to become real and present hauntings that persist until today. If you’re curious as to what these stories are, here are 5 Southeast Asian horror movies based on true stories that will guarantee you will never feel alone again even if you are or make you feel you are in a haunted house.

1. Indonesia Horror Movie: Ruqyah The Exorcism (2017)

Ruqyah The Exorcism (2017) | Horror Movies Recommended by Hauntu

This true story is set in mid 2012 and tells the story of a film actress who is disturbed by a spirit and is advised by a reporter to find an Ustad (religious Shaman) for a Ruqyah (exorcism). The creepy part of this movie is that fact and fiction in this case are eerily intertwined.

Trivia: According to the filmmakers, the person who first inspired the movie is a friend of the lead actress. According to the friend, the actress actually dabbled in black magic to get fame for herself and in return is haunted by the devil. If you have watched horror movies like The Conjuring or The Exorcism of Emily Rose, you might enjoy this film, which is available on Iflix. Given the story surrounding the making of this movie, we hereby indemnify ourselves from all hauntings that result from watching the movie so proceed at your own risk.

2. Malaysia Horror Movie: Karak (2011)

Next movie on our list is something very close to home. The movie follows four friends who, after a night out in Kuala Lumpur, in an attempt to make it back for their morning classes, they take a detour back to college via a single carriageway. The decision ultimately changes their lives forever in ways that we will leave you to imagine. This horror movie is in the horror comedy genre but still packs some decent scares that might make you want to sleep with the lights on. You may catch this show on Netflix.

Trivia: Most Malaysians would be aware of the infamously haunted Karak highway and the movie is eponymously named Karak, after the small rest town in Bentong, Pahang along the Kuala Lumpur – Kuantan federal route. Karak is well known for perhaps the wrong reasons – Old Karak road boasts numerous ghost sightings, spirit possessions, and inexplicable disappearances that most motorists today will try to avoid driving down that road. You are well-advised to make sure your petrol tank is full before embarking on a goosebump worthy drive through there and our advice is as much as ghost sightings may be in the back of your mind, DON’T IMAGINE! You have been warned.

3. Philippines Horror Movie: Aurora (2018)

Aurora Horror Movies Recommended by Hauntu

Aurora, our Phillippine entry on this list, tells the story of Leana and her younger sister Rita as they look for missing bodies in the wreckage of a passenger ship that ran aground on rocks off an island. If spirits of the dead, ghosts and the deep mysterious ocean give you a kick, this horror flick is for you.

Trivia: The movie is based on a true event that occurred on December 20, 1987, when 4386 people perished in an incident known as Asia’s Titanic. The ferry Doña Paz was making its twice-weekly journey from Leyte island to the Filipino capital Manila, when it collided with the oil tanker MT Vector, claiming the lives of most on board. If that is not gruesome and horrific enough, the hauntings that come after will be enough to send chills down your spine. For those who believe that one cannot cheat fate, this horror movie will be a good watch with nods to the Final Destination genre of horror movies. You can catch this show on Netflix.

4. Singapore Horror Movie: 23:59 (2011)

23:59 Horror Movies Recommended by Hauntu

Inspired by the true story of a Singaporean army recruit who goes missing and is later found dead, 23:59 is a gripping horror retelling of the incident. Made on a modest budget, this movie is light on horror but heavy on suspense and dread and is worth a watch as a low budget indie movie that is available on Netflix.

Trivia: Perhaps what makes this storyline all the more creepy is the fact that Pulau Tekong is a well documented haunted place. Stories abound of sightings of spirits and repeated sightings of the same ghosts by numerous people, in particular the ghost at Charlie Company – the old military camp. Unfortunately, teasing out fact from fiction may prove difficult as the stories have been distorted over the years such that what is true and what isn’t is not so apparent. Perhaps the best way to figure that out is to pay the island a visit yourself.

5. Thailand Horror Movie: The Unborn Child (2011)

The Unborn Chile Horror Movies Recommended by Hauntu

Finally, Thailand. Home to some memorable ghost stories, this film is sure to delight those with a penchant for paranormal malicious spirits. The movie tells the story of a couple and their young daughter who are haunted by an evil presence linked to a temple and a series of gruesome abortions. The storyline is scary enough as a work of fiction but is creepily and tragically based on true events and this promising premise for a quality horror flick is brought to life by a storyline that features a young girl and her mischievous invisible friend.

Trivia: This story is based on a true event – the gruesome discovery of 2002 dead bodies of babies from illegal abortion clinics found in a Bangkok Buddhist Temple. The snuffing out of life of innocent children is always difficult to stomach and the film draws some comparison to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. This show is available on Netflix.

And that completes the list for our top 5 horror movies from Southeast Asia based on true stories! For lovers of Asian horror films, these movies will be sure to delight (or scare, if that is your goal). We dare all fans of horror movies to try watching these 5 most frightening horror films from Southeast Asia in 5 nights straight and see if any uninvited visitors decide to show up. Just writing this is giving me the feeling of chills up my spine…

1. Villa Nabilla

Villa Nabila Haunted Place

Our first entry hails all the way from the South of the peninsular in Danga Bay, Johor Bahru. Villa Nabila, a 40 year old abandoned bungalow was the site of a grisly triple homicide. Owned and lived in by a caucasian family, their idyllic lives were tragically cut short when the entire family was murdered by 2 hitmen in cold blood. The unsolved crime would live on in infamy with horrifying rumours of the daughter Nabila’s body having been cemented to the walls of the home by the ruthless killers. Villa Nabila was made into a film by a Malaysian production company, Skop Productions. The haunted villa lives on as one of the most haunted places in Malaysia, attracting worldwide attention with articles written about it and remains a popular haunt for ghost hunters and others with darker inclinations.

2. 99 Door Haunted Mansion

This second haunted place in Malaysia was once known as Caledonia house, this mansion was renamed as 99 Door Haunted Mansion by John Ramsden, who was from one of the richest families in England. The house was so named for its remarkable 99 doors, which ultimately did little to help the owner escape his gruesome fate. In 1948, John Ramsden was brutally murdered by Communist guerillas. Soon after, his wife, traumatised by the murder of her husband, took her own life in the very same house where they once lived a calm, peaceful and prosperous life. This historical building now lives on as a haunted house favoured by witch doctors who use the site to supercharge their black magic rituals. As if that is not creepy enough, local rumours have said that at 12 midnight, a 100th door appears, which many claim to be a portal between this world and the spirit realm. We don’t know how many have crossed the threshold to the other side, nor do we know how many have failed to return. All we know is that the house is a popular site for paranormal explorers and ghost hunters, so much so that Amy’s Crypt, a notable paranormal investigator, made a video and published an article about this haunted place in Malaysia.

3. Penang War Museum

It’s no wonder we have a museum on the list. Known to host all sorts of weird and creepy artefacts, some museum’s have a chilling energy that can’t be denied. This particular museum however, has a much grimmer history. Located in Batu Maung, Penang, the museum was built in 1930 by the Royal British Engineers as a fortress to stop the invasion of enemy combatants. When the Japanese Army invaded Malaya in WWII, they took over the museum and turned it into a prisoner of war camp. The museum today has changed little from those times, with execution relics, renovated bunkers and dark tunnels on full display. Visitors have claimed paranormal activity of ghosts and demons who locals believe are the trapped souls of those tortured and murdered by the Japanese Imperial Army. The site gained notoriety as one of the top 10 most haunted places in Malaysia and Asia after being featured in the Times of India, ITB Berlin News, Traveloka and National Geographic. The haunted museum is still open to visit and is often cited as a must see place for tourists with a penchant for the darker side of things.

4. Kellie’s Castle

Kellie Castle | Haunted Places Malaysia

Most Malaysians would have heard about Kellie’s Castle in Batu Gajah, Perak and perhaps even visited the place on a school trip. Well on the tourist map, the castle is an architectural gem, combining both Moorish and Western elements in its construction. The story around Kellie’s castle is well known. Besotted by his wife, a devoted William Kellie-Smith decided to build the castle for her. Sadly, he would not have a chance to see the castle in its full glory after dying of Pneumonia while on his way back to Europe in 1926. His wife and now fatherless children refused to return to Malaya and the castle was eventually left to be swallowed by the surrounding jungle. It is said that several Tamil workers died of Spanish flu while the castle was being built. Later on, it was rumoured to have been used by the Japanese for the torture and execution of prisoners. Ghostly sightings in Kellie’s Castle continue on to this day, the most famous of which is the apparition of a wailing lady roaming the halls of the castle. Locals believe her to be the spirit of the long deceased wife frantically looking for her husband. The haunted castle, one of the most haunted places in Malaysia was used as a setting in the 1999 film Anna and the King and was brought to the attention of the world by features on Tripadvisor and the South China Morning Post.

5. Amber Court (Famous Haunted Place in Malaysia)

Most would have heard of the haunted hotels in Genting Highlands. However, this lesser known hotel is possibly way creepier and more haunted than the rest. Built in 1995, this hotel in Genting Highlands is still running as a fully functioning hotel that guests can stay at. If you dare venture to this haunted place, pay attention to the room with the locked grill bolted on its doors. It was here that 7 members of the same family perished mysteriously without explanation. Some people say they were murdered, others say it was a suicide plot. Whatever the reason, the incident lives on in the sheer number of paranormal sightings reported by hotel guests. The hotel and the events surrounding its infamy was even made into a horror film, Haunted Hotel, bravely shot on location. Amber court was also featured in a youtube channel called Exploring with Cody, cementing its reputation as one of the most ghostly places in Malaysia.

6. Karak Highway

Karak Highway - 7 most haunted places in Malaysia

If you think that only buildings can be haunted, then think again! Karak Highway is rather infamous as being one of the most haunted highways in Malaysia. The highway was built as an alternative route to Route 68 and has a dark history of multiple accidents being recorded, with the worst happening in the 1990s where a multiple car pile up caused the deaths of 17 people. The highway is now notorious for its urban legends and stories. The highway is known to be the haunt of a yellow Volkswagen Beetle that is rumored to have no driver in it! It is also the site of other urban legends such as the story of a family’s car breaking down who’s husband would end up being the victim of a gruesome killing as well as a mysterious phone call to a radio host! If you’re keen to learn more about the sinister history of Karak, you can read our article on Karak here

7. Hauntu

Night Ride to Work (True Horror Story By Sachin)

So I was on call (Dentist) and at that time my place was 30min away. So I received a call and I drove to the hospital. There’s a shortcut I always take that will pass through a village with an eerie view and nothing but trees.

So this village has no proper drain works. And it was the rainy season. So the area will be the first to flood. And I didn’t want to be stuck in the flood. As I drove to the hospital, I was cursing as I saw the drains were full of water and it’s getting on the roads. I was thinking later it might be flooding and I can’t go home.

Then halfway driving I saw this overweight man, or so I thought and he was standing next to the drain which was full of water. It was in heavy rain and since I drove fast I just passed him and I was thinking “EH what is this man doing outside? Is he mad? Is he OKU? What was he doing outside under the heavy rain? I wanted to stop to go and ask whether he’s OK or not but as I drove past him I was looking at him and I saw a glance of him turning his head to me.

Then straight away I looked in my rear mirror and just like that he disappeared. It was just a mere seconds after passing through him and I decided to look in the mirror. There wasn’t anybody there. It doesn’t make any sense. I was having chills all over my body. I continue driving to the hospital. I didn’t take the same road back.

Kisah Seram by Hauntu Ep-4 : The Dead Child #MyHauntuStory

The Dead Child (True Story By Atiqa)

Me and my fam were walking on the way to buy groceries. Along the way there was a kindergarten, it was a Sunday so it was closed. But then I saw a boy on the swings, and another younger girl sliding down the slide who will think that they are dead? I told my fam, “those kids must be the owners of the place”.

But when my fam looked at it, there was no one, but the swing was swaying as if there was someone on it. My mom reassured me, there was no one. I remember it very clearly as it happened, no wonder I didn’t see the kid’s face but just the jersey the boy wore.

This was in 2014, it was the first night after my last SPM paper. My friends and I were hanging out late at night celebrating the “freedom” we had after finishing SPM. It was just a normal night, smoking shisha, recalling the absurd questions in our SPM papers, until one of my friends, Sheikh, suggested to us that we do something we’ve never done before, “Ghost Hunting”. Me and my other two friends, Syafiq and Faiz almost chickened out but after being convinced by Sheikh we all just went along with it. Sheikh claimed that he knew there was a house, belonged to Mona Fendy in Dato’ Keramat area. Sheikh used to live in a condo near this Mona Fandy house that he claimed. So that was our first destination.

Now Syafiq just got a brand new Myvi so he was the driver, Faiz sat in front while Sheikh and I sat in the backseat of the car. When we got to the allegedly Mona Fendy’s house, a zinc barrier was already put up. I’m not sure what you call that thing, it’s like at the construction site with all the zinc things around it. So it seemed like the house was ready to be demolished, or reconstructed. So we left feeling disappointed. I mean we were scared as shit but we were hoping to see “something” at least just to experience it. So we drove away, heading to drop Faiz home. It’s around 3AM now. Here was when things got creepy.

When we stopped at the traffic light, in front of Jelatek LRT station, next to the Taman Tasik Dato’ Keramat, the car radio suddenly turned off. I shouted “Tak payah lah tutup lagu tengah sedap tu!” But everyone stayed quiet. Because no one even touched the radio. Now how the hell a brand new Myvi could have problems with the radio? At this moment no one actually said a thing until the traffic light turned green. Next thing we know, god I can’t forget this moment, the radio turned itself back on, to a frequency I’ve never seen before, AND PLAYED A MONA FENDY SONG, A SONG CALLED PURA-PURA. I recognized the song through its melody and rhythm because back then I searched her songs on Youtube for fun after discovering who she was.

But this time, the song sounded really creepy, the voice was distorted, and accompanied by traditional Malay instruments. It was playing for a good 20-30 seconds. Everyone just stared at the radio, speechless and Syafiq now started driving slowly, ready to stop the car if anything happens (though I’d say that wouldn’t be a good idea). I jumped from the backseat to turn the radio off myself. Now things got quiet again. We dropped Faiz home, we didn’t say much, just did some handshakes, and left. Everyone was pretty much shaken up by the incident.

We decided to let the radio turned off for the rest of the trip. Now Sheikh is in the passenger seat. I kept looking at the radio to make sure no one touched the radio, and to make sure the radio doesn’t turn itself on again. BUT, when we reached the same traffic light, in front of Jelatek LRT, THE RADIO TURNED ITSELF ON AGAIN AND PLAYED THE SAME SONG. We screamed like hell and turned off the radio and Syafiq hit the gas like he was Dominic Toretto and headed home at top speed. Needless to say, the 3 of us slept at Syafiq’s place that night because it was just crazy. Next morning, Syafiq checked the radio, everything was fine, working as normal. They didn’t know what song it was until we spoke about it 2 weeks later, and I told them it’s a Mona Fendy song, titled “Pura-pura” we listened to it on Youtube and they remembered but it was this song but distorted and using different instrumentals. It felt surreal.

Well. That’s the story. I believe she “knew” we were looking for her, and maybe tried to communicate with us through the radio, though it sounds far fetched. We were looking forward to “seeing” Mona Fandy. I guess she saw us first 🙂

Kisah Seram by Hauntu – Ep 3 #MyHauntuStory Kena Kacau Dgn Dukun?

Kisah Seram Ep3 | #MyHauntuStory – Kena Kacau dengan Dukun?Transcript

The 5th Floor (True Story By Jen)

So this happened when I was studying in Taiwan. During every junior’s freshman year there’s always gonna be seniors who tell us chilling paranormal stories to us, and I am no exception because it is always fun to hear and one would usually think that it’s nothing, but not for me apparently. I was a performing arts student and my classes were usually held in this specific building where each level corresponds to each department, one level being the performing arts department and it is located on the 9th floor. So my seniors had told us about a suicide case which took part on the 5th floor, where a girl apparently hung herself due to depression and family problems.

After that case, many people actually had some paranormal experiences which we were also told by our seniors. Obviously, as a naive and bold person, I didn’t think much about it, but of course, I didn’t dismiss that fact, as well as I, don’t wanna disrespect anyone. But one night after my usual evening dance practice I was ready to go back to my dorm and as I was descending from the 9th floor the elevator stopped on the 5th floor. Side note I was alone with no one else and the building usually closes at 9pm sharp.

So I was on the 5th floor thinking that someone wants to enter and waited, but as the door open not only was there no one waiting but the hallways were all pitch black dark, at first I didn’t think much about it because I thought someone must have pressed wrongly but then again, the exit for the staircase was locked and there’s no way out unless we took the elevator. As I was about to press the close button I felt an unusual chill down my spine and heard a vague crying sound, and what’s worse is that the door didn’t close for a good minute. Thankfully the door closes again and I was praying during my whole journey back down to the first floor. So yeah, that was my experience.

The Dukun Radio (True Story By Danial)

On that day around noontime, SIFU asked me to dismiss all the employees and myself to stay at the entrance of the shop in case he needs me. While he was doing his ceremony in all the rooms, he called me into one of the rooms. I name it Room R. He told me there is this thing in this room (some paranormal activity going on) that he needs extra effort to lock the spirit but everything is going to be fine. He told me the gender and age and how’s the thing looks like and that thing was residing in the corner of the room.

Honestly speaking, I can’t see it so I somewhat ignored it and didn’t bother much. I didn’t tell anyone either. A few days later, one of our ex-employees went into this room R to do some setup and QC the room. She can see things as I heard from other colleagues and she walked from room R quietly. I asked her what happened? She said, “KaWai, I saw it.. there is a kid at the corner of the room”. She does not want to reply when I further ask her. But.. yes, Sifu told me it was a KID. I got a goosebump at that time.. Maybe it’s just coincident.

A few months later, a group of customers with a young boy around the age of 7-8-year-old were experiencing the game in room R. Suddenly, the group called for our game master in the middle of the game. Our Game master attended them and apparently the young boy was crying and say “He is looking at me from that corner” . The other members of the group thought the boy doesn’t want to play and make such lame excuses. Game master escorted the kid out and the game continues. The issue was escalated to me. I texted SIFU and ask. Sifu said “Don’t worry, see he never harm anyone, the thing is just lonely and want to participate”

After those few incidents, on and off I heard reported cases like screws were missing and reappeared in the room R when the game master was fixing stuff. But nothing was major.

I don’t know whether the thing existed but I always believe if we don’t disturb anything from another world, they won’t disturb us either.

Horror Story: The Senior (True Story By Jia)

Basically , one of our clubs in our university held a theatre ” the masque of the red death” in which on the day of the play, my friend and I were re-touching the props and there were only two of us. It was around 7 pm and no one was there yet as we were finishing our jobs on the boxes and props from the audience seat I saw one of our senior who is going to act in the play sat alone in the chair, not thinking much I continued my work until I feel a sudden chill on my neck and I glanced at our senior once more and that was when I realized her face was all black. No eyes can be seen. It was pure black no nose, no outline of her jaws, just black and she stared at the floor for a long time.

Well I was being an idiot didn’t think much of this so I ask my friend who was reattaching the box with a string

“Hey J , isn’t that our senior? Why is her face so black is there any scene in the play that required additional makeup? I didn’t realize she had been sitting there for a long time” I asked him and he threw his glance at the woman sitting in one of the chairs before quickly looking down. “…let wrap up and we’ll come back later” his face tighten

“Well what’s the matter?, our senior kan are you afraid of something” I snorted

“…you do realize that’s not our senior,” he says quietly

My dense head was trying to figure out what he was rambling about.

“Dude that is our senior. She wore the same clothes this afternoon” as I pointed at the unmoved girl in the chair.

“You cant see the white part of her eyes and… she didn’t even move for past minutes.. we are the only two people in this hall, the actor and actresses had gone home to change and there is no way she is here and doing nothing”

As I  piece all the information together I realized what he meant

” oh dude, don’t tell me that is..”

The senior was still sitting there, not doing anything just staring at the floor. No matter how hard we tried to make sense of her face it was impossible. She was composed and sat there. That scares me the most, usually, ghosts or the one I played in Hauntu was interactive. She just sat there and had no movement at all. As if waiting

“We gotta get out of here but how”  because the *senior* apparently sat opposite to the exit and before we could even panicking.

Suddenly the senior stood up and moved very slowly to the exit and when we try to peek to see her back, she was gone.

It was scary and we wanted to go home but showtime was nearing so we had to stay and after 4 minutes or so, our original senior came barging into the hall with her clothes for the show and she saw us and greeted us. Her complexion was fair, we could see he eyes and movement and all and she looked us funny “you looked like you seen a ghost”

“Yeah you dangit” I whisper to my friend.

The show goes on flawlessly and there were other strange things that happened but well I think I wrote enough.

Since this day we still don’t know what the heck we saw in the hall that day. Could be that we used eggs to make blood for the scene and it attracts it.

… the crazy coincidence was that the senior I had been…talking in this story about was the same senior that had been possessed months ago when the ustadz asked our help to assist her. I didn’t know it was her until someone had told me about it.

Kisah Seram by Hauntu – Ep 1 #MyHauntuStory The Hauntu Suite Room

Kisah Seram Ep1: True Horror Story Transcript

Kisah Seram: The Possesion (True Story By Aedam Daniel)

I was 10 years old, at an age of naivety. I’ll be honest, I’ve always been a fan of horrific and morbid stories/events for as long as I can remember but when I was 10, I remember being sceptical about anything paranormal-related. I didn’t believe that they existed. Just a big hoax to scare people or to tell their children so they’ll behave themselves but all of this changed on one fateful night in December.

It was pretty much like any other night but then my mother came into the front door with my grandfather (her dad). Which was weird because it was pretty late for a visit but something was off. My mother has always been a chirpy woman, happy go lucky if I may add. She looked different. Her face looked older and she was hunching. Now, bear in mind. She was 6 months pregnant with my youngest brother. At this point, her baby bump was obvious and she isn’t able to bend over anymore. Though I saw with my very own eyes that she was hunching like an old lady with a walking stick. She came up to the master bedroom with my grandfather helping her out.

Nenek kebayan | Kisah Seram Hauntu

She sat down on the bed, facing the entrance of the room.  I was standing outside facing her. I was confused, asking myself, “Why does she look like that? Why did she walk hunching over?” My sister was just only 2 years old, she came up to me and asked me to carry her. My mother then looked at us and what she said will forever be engraved in my mind. “Cu….mari sini ke nek….cu” as she says with a raspy voice of an old lady. At this point, I knew that she wasn’t my mother anymore and something was possessing her. Right after she said that she immediately looked at my parents’ wedding portrait and shouted, “LELAKI TU SETAN, LELAKI TU SETAN!” as she pointed at my father in the photo. My grandfather immediately asked me to move away and he locked the door. I was in shock. I brought my sister to her room. I was speechless. So many questions rushed through my head.

“Am I going to see my mother again?” “Is she going to die?” “What’s going to happen to me and my siblings”. I started crying with every question rushed into my head. I felt like I was crying for hours. My sister was looking at me confused wondering why I was crying. About an hour has passed, my grandfather finally unlocked the door and came out. I ran to him and asked whether my mother was okay? He said she was fine. I rushed into the room and into the master bathroom to find my mom refreshing herself. I was crying but I was happy and hugged her. My mother calmed me down and said, “Shhhh… stop crying. It’s still lingering somewhere around here. You crying will call it back here.” I immediately kept quiet and went out to my room. The night became normal again but from that night going on, I believe that ghost/entities are real. Roaming around as we do.

Kisah Seram: The Resident of Suite Room (True Story By Aiman)

Cerita seram ni jadi masa I baru je kerja seminggu kat Hauntu. Knowing myself, I ni sgt susah la nak jumpa or nampak this kind of thing. So kt Hauntu ni consider my first time. Masa tu baru je clock in, I buat opening dengan Atiqa for Iman.

Masa open suite room tu I bawa la flashlight along. Lepas both light dah buka, when we are about to keluar bilik, I toleh belakang again to check the room, siap suluh flashlight lg. And then I clearly saw a shadow, bentuk macam lelaki yang bagak, ambushing me really fast. I can even feel the wind and then I stucked. Suddenly Atiqa dragged me to the dressing room like knowing something.

As we know Atiqa did claim that she can see things. So I rasa macam makes sense tau tindakan dia tu. Then petang tu masa tak ada wave I have a talk with Atiqa and she said she did see the thing too, even clearer. I told her lah yang I tak pernah nampak something like this ever in my life, even I can see its shape and size.

Kisah Seram Hauntu

I said to her,   “Maybe I can see this because you are there. Dia suka dekat you kot, tiqa!” But then Tiqa said, “It’s a she!”. I’ve goosebumps.

THEATRES AND THEIR HAUNTINGS

Theatres & Their Hauntings

Theatres have, for much of human history, featured as an important venue where people gather for reasons none other than to be drawn into a fictional world as a temporary escape from the tedium of day to day life. The tradition of performance art dates back millennia, with every culture having their own theatrical or story-telling tradition some of which can still be found today.

A lesser-known fact about theatres, however, is that theatres attract paranormal activity much more predictably than other places. The phenomenon of theatre hauntings is well documented around the world, and those who work in the industry will often recount, wide-eyed and in hushed tones, their own experiences of inexplicable hauntings that they themselves bore witness to.

The reasons why theatre hauntings are so common have been subject to some speculation and study. One theory is that the intense energies generated by the unbridled outpouring of passionate emotion by both actors and audience both creates a charged atmosphere that attracts spirits and ghosts, and also allows for poltergeist activity as a consequence of the energetic imprint left on the buildings over time. The saying if these walls could speak should perhaps be better stated as when these walls do speak, as theatres will make their ghostly voices heard whether we like it or not.

Theatres are such well-known sites of hauntings that the tradition of the ghost light became an inseparable part of theatre culture. A simple contraption, a ghost light is usually an incandescent bulb that is left switched on overnight on stage. The light is kept on to appease the theatre spirits, giving them free use of the stage during the quiet dark nights, and on the days when the auditorium is closed up and empty. This ritual is said to prevent the spirits and ghosts from causing disturbances with the real performances by giving the spirits their own stage to shine on, and is a tradition hundreds of years old that persists until today. Some theatres even go a step further and leave designated seats empty at all times solely for its ghostly guests.

The tradition of the ghost light, while originating from abroad, has made its way to Malaysia as well. Local theatres have unfortunately not been spared by supernatural hauntings, and the phenomenon seems to hold true here. The old Actor’s Studio in the lower basement of Dataran Merdeka was notoriously haunted by ghosts and anyone who worked on the premises will unhesitatingly recount sightings and incidents that regularly occurred. According to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, the paranormal activity was so commonplace that it was eventually taken for granted as something one came to expect.

According to the source , stage managers would often see an additional actor on stage during rehearsals and live performances, sometimes even mistakenly recalling the lost ghostly actor from backstage. The Front of House and the ushers would also see figures of persons on stage who were not meant to be there, only to have them vanish in the blink of an eye. Furthermore, the stage hands who worked the lights up on the catwalk and who had the task of setting up in an often empty auditorium would recount strange noises as well as footsteps and voices that could not be traced to a human source.

Actors Hauntu Theater

Given the nature of HauntU as an interactive theatrical performance, it is inevitable that the fate of theatres as paranormal hotspots befall HauntU and its premises. We honestly think it is only a matter of time before real sightings and inexplicable incidents are reported. Who knows, they may, in all probability, have already occurred. Despite the lack of reported sightings, it is highly plausible that ghostly spirits have managed to slip by unnoticed at HauntU. After all, a haunted experience is the perfect camouflage for a ghost. Even if they did make a brief appearance, caused some ghostly knocks or flickering lights, you would be none the wiser, thinking that what you see and hear is part of the show. Indeed, a better cover than a haunted theatrical performance has yet to be found for a ghost.

In all, the verdict is still out on whether this is a positive or negative. One cannot help but wonder if it is indeed better to be blissfully ignorant when it comes to ghostly encounters. We can at least rest assured that theatre ghosts seek the limelight and attention and are drawn to the thrill of the performance. Sure, they may just as well make a cheeky appearance now and again but rest assured these ghosts are drawn to the drama of venue itself and will unlikely follow you home. To these ghostly entities, your life is pretty boring in comparison to the wonder and magic afforded by the drama of the performance stage.
